This is a list compiled from some of the best in the business about ways to ensure that your writing and content published on your website is of the highest quality! Now we aren’t experts in this topic, but don’t go yet! As always this article is a mixture of our experience and research and is meant to help and guide you as an entrepreneur, as much as possible, in a world where information is so abundant. Abundant but not always useful or relevant. If you are able to follow this list when producing content for your website (and as much as we try, not even we get it right often enough!) you will be producing high quality content that will help others in no time!
1 – write original content
Google and other search engines look to boost the rankings of legitimate and original content published and to remove websites from search results that blatantly copy other websites and their work in order to boost traffic. In a world where your website can be the first impression of your business and brand, be sure to be as authentic and original as possible!
2 – use engaging and attractive headlines
Think about adverts that have stood out for you. Odds are these are adverts which catchy slogans or titles that meant something, involved a play on words or just seemingly answered a bringing question you may have had. This same principle applies to your content headings (as seen by traffic that you want in the google search results) so focus on writing headings for your content that will grab the readers attention and stand out from all the rest.
3 – use coherent and friendly (but correct) language
We often try to write in as friendly a tone as possible here at Ciya Business Solutions, however we always try and stick to grammatical rules. Sites have often reported that the best articles are ones that are grammatically correct, involve great language composition and that are not full of unnecessary jargon.
4 – write concisely but with detail
Try put yourself in your readers shoes, do you really have time to sift through a 3000 or 4000 word blog that involves a lot of nice to know but really unhelpful information?
5 – keep the page layout in a flowing and logical manner
People become irritated (and bounce rates increase) when they have to put in effort to follow the flow of an article, rather than being led through it. Allow your article to flow seamlessly from one paragraph to the next, or from visual to visual, without jumping around the page, unnecessarily changing font style or size and by generally being easy to read.
6 – write on thought provoking topics (its almost a guarantee your topic might already have been covered)
This is the age of information, there is no doubting it. Just think of how much there is on the web alone. However this means that the odds of your writing being the first on a particular subject are low. Don’t let this dismay you, rather use this to your advantage by finding ways to stand out from the crowd! Add something new, combine many sources, write it in a new refreshing way, anything that will make your writing different from others like it!
7 – help people by answering the questions they may have
As you’ll notice, a lot of the articles that we like to write on here at Ciya Business Solutions are focused “HOW TO” type articles and aim to answer many questions that our target audience (start out/up entrepreneurs wandering where to begin). Try to make your website do the same and help your target audience!
8 – include infographics, videos and images
We all joke about not enjoying a book if it doesn’t have at least one picture on every page (oh… is it just me?) however this seems to be very true on the web. Posts that involve some sort of multimedia that add (not detract) from the overall message, tend to perform better with search traffic and in search rankings
9 – update your content and website regularly (focusing on what works)
Take a look at the articles and pages on your website in order to see which ones perform the best with readers (watch the bounce rate) and search engines (watch the page rank) in order to see what works and what doesn’t. Use this knowledge to update other pages to try and match those same successful themes and in no time you should start seeing some good traffic improvement overall! Search engines also prefer websites and posts that are not out of date or inactive
10 – make your content actionable
If your traffic can implement the suggestions or knowledge you prescribe in your articles, you’ll see a lot more appreciation and an increase in the traffic your page tends to attract.
11 – be accurate in your information and be sure to source it correctly
In a world stuffed full of information, it wasn’t long before people started speeding misinformation. We do not guarantee we won’t ever get something wrong in our articles, but we jump through hoops to ensure that only the most trustworthy sources are used and you’ll find leaders online all over telling you to do the same. Your users will appreciate this greatly!
12 – be sure to be an expert in what you’re writing about, or at least state if you are not
Google and other search engines look at a sites authority on the topic which provides content about and if it feels you have none, you will not rank particularly well. Aside from that, it is important to be honest with your readers, if you aren’t an expert on a topic, be sure to tell them and be straightforward right from the get go!
13 – share and invite others to share the content on social media in order to test its quality
Social media is hugely powerful. There we said it and hope by now that you know too. It has an almost un-paralleled way to reach others around the globe and allow you to interact with them. Use this to your advantage by publishing your content and seeing how your followers react to it. Use these reactions to guide further publications more in tune with what your following and possible traffic source may want
14 – get writers in your field who have written on similar topics to review it
Before research is published in journals it has to go through a peer review process in order to validate its quality, why not do the same with your article. Email your article or at least a link thereof to as many leaders in your industry and use their advice to your advantage! You’re increasing your exposure at the same time so it’s definitely a win-win situation
15 – backlinks from other reputable websites on the topic will improve your post’s traffic
As a bonus from the above step, backlinks from what search engines deem authoritative websites on the topic will boost your posts ranking tremendously in the search results, bringing in more traffic and hopefully more business!
16 – know what your target audience likes and would like to hear
Do your research on your target market. Who are they, what questions might they have and what facts could they potentially benefit greatly from learning? Use these guidelines to help you keep your material relevant and of high quality to them.
17 – read articles by the leaders in your industry or market every day
What better way to learn other than from the pros themselves? Often publishing high quality articles and blogs in tune with the latest trends, the leaders in your industry provide the best examples of the kind of writing you should be aiming to produce for your readers!
18 – practice writing all the time
Again the old adage speaks true: practice makes perfect. By constantly trying to improve your writing you will be not just bettering yourself, but also learning more on the topics you cover and also increasing the amount of traffic that you will hopefully help drive towards your site, and that’s never a bad thing.
19– allow those around you of varying backgrounds and interests to review your writing
If your writing can engage someone who is not interested or does understand the topic on which you cover, then you know you are on to a winner. This is a great way to try and improve your writing so as to cater for as many users as possible.
20 – allow comments on your writing so as to learn from your readers
Get it from the horse’s mouth. Your best advice about how you should be writing will come from those whom you are trying to write. Plus your users will appreciate you interest in what they have to say and you may increase return traffic!
21 – follow the trends that similar sites are using
There is a reason certain trends in content production develop over time. Be sure to stay on top of the latest so as to make the most of any and every opportunity to increase your traffic!
22 – ask yourself if this is the kind of article you would be happy you came across
Some of the best advice we have come across so far is to try and write the kind of material that we had once needed or hoped to find when doing our own research. If you cover something and are happy with it, then odds are that you’ll be pleasing others out there as well!
